“In October 2010, I felt a lump at the top of my right breast.   I was referred for a mammogram and an ultrasound.  It wasn’t the lump that I felt that was the problem, it was the mass lurking behind it.   After two needle biopsies and a chest MRI, it was found that at 34 years old, I had breast cancer and it had spread to my lymph nodes.   Invasive Ductal Carcinoma to be exact.   In December 2010, I had a double mastectomy with the beginning of breast reconstruction.   In January 2011, I had surgery to have my port placed and start the battle of my life with chemo.  Even after the mastectomy, I had two suspicious masses pop up that had to be surgically removed.  They couldn’t do a needle biopsy with the tissue expanders in place.   Thankfully those biopsies came back normal.  I am currently on chemo treatment 47 of 52 with hopes of finishing chemo on January 24, 2012.   The money raised will go to pay off our medical bills with the hospital, radiologist, imaging centers, oncologist, surgeons, etc that have mounted over the past year.”

On August 14, 2011, while lying in bed, I felt a small lump on my upper right breast.  That moment would be the start of a long and terrifying journey.  On August 16th I had a mammogram, ultrasound and needle core biopsy of the ugly little bump that had become the main focus of my life.  Then on August 23rd I received the phone call that no one ever expects to get.   I had breast cancer.  I was a 31 year old mother of two small children and I had breast cancer. I underwent a lumpectomy to remove the tumor but pathlogy reports revealed that it was unsuccessful in getting clear margins.   So I had a second lumpectomy and port placed, this time they got it all.  I learned that my official diagnosis was Stage I, Grade 3, TripleNegative Invasive Ductal Carcinoma.  I have complete 7 of 8 chemotherapy treatments and in March will begin 35 radiation treatments.

I am so grateful for the support of my friends, family and community.  The money raised will go toward the medical expenses created by this unexpected diagnosis.

Steve and I have triplet daughters that are 4 ½. Teagan was diagnosed in May of 2010 with Leukemia. She responded right away to the chemo, and was put in remission after one month. She has done great through all of her 2 ½ year treatment plan, and will finish her chemo in July of this year. Ryleigh was diagnosed in July 2011 with Leukemia also. She was put in remission after the first month of treatment, and is doing great, also. She still has 2 years of treatment left. The diagnosis of two of our daughters getting Leukemia has sure been unexpected, but we’re very blessed to have a lot of family to  help us out! We appreciate your support for this fundraiser!

Warrior #10 Khalil Amin Nominated by Amina Hogan

Khalil’s Benefit is being planned for Saturday, September 8, 2012.  If you would like to donate a raffle or silent auction item for this event, contact Emily Pottebaum at 402.213.7669 or auntieemsangels@yahoo.com

PICTURE COMING SOON!

Khalil, a respected member in our family and community has taken ill. He has been an integral part of the Omaha community for over 33 years. He has played a vital role in welcoming new immigrants and making their difficult transition a smoother one. Not only innumerable families, as well as strangers have benefited from his kindness, generosity and intelligence. He is 57 years old with a loving wife and 3 beautiful children.

We now ask for your help.

Khalil has been fighting for his life. He has been diagnosed with Cancer that attacks the bone marrow. With months of treatment, and months strictly in the hospital, his cancer is in remission, but he’s in desperate need of a bone marrow transplant. His body is not responding well, and has suffered a stroke, and seizures.
We hope that by reaching out to the community, we can help fund his treatment, and help the family be relieved of a monetary stress while they focus on the health of a father, uncle, and husband.

Warrior #11 Blake Jeffries  Nominated by Dana Bittner and Robyn Rafter

Blake’s Benefit is being planned for Saturday, October 6, 2012.  If you would like to donate a raffle or silent auction item for this event, contact Emily Pottebaum at 402.213.7669 or auntieemsangels@yahoo.com.

Blake was diagnosed with Poorly-Diffused Follicular Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma on February 29, 2012 after being seen in the emergency room for lower back pain.  He quickly then started a chemotherapy regimen called “RCHOP” on Monday March 12th, 2012 with Dr. Margaret Block and her wonderful staff over at the Midwest Cancer Center on 178th & Center.  He will go once every three weeks, for a total of six treatments.  Our hope is that Blake will be in remission in roughly 4-6 months.  He will also most likely be receiving maintenance therapy once every two months thereafter.  Unfortunately, Blake’s type of cancer is a “chronic” type, so it is common for it to resurface after remission.  It is possible that he may have to look towards a stem cell transplant sometime in the future.

Unfortunately, Blake has been out of work for almost six weeks now and we still are unsure as to how much more work he will miss.  He has had four surgeries and is on his fifth one today, Friday April 6th, 2012, to remove a faulty port and have a new one replaced.  He also developed a blood clot this past week in response to the broken port, and is sadly having a lot of pain because of it.

We are asking for help to take the financial burden off of Blake’s and his family while he is receiving his life-saving treatment.  His fiance (soon-to-be-wife) is a Labor & Delivery nurse at both Lakeside & ImmanuelHospital.  Blake also has an adorable & very sweet 2-year old son who just adores his daddy!  The money raised for Blake will be used to help Blake care for his family and pay for insurance premiums, deductibles, medications and all the left-over bills that insurance doesn’t cover.  Please consider helping Blake on his journey.

Let’s come together and give Blake hope!

Thank you all so very much!!

#12 Warrior TO BE ANNOUNCED!!! WE ARE RAISING MONEY FOR THEM IN REMSEN IOWA ON JUNE 30TH AT THE TA TA’S FUN RIDE.  THEY MUST BE A CANCER PATIENT IN REMSEN, IA TO RECEIVE THE FUNDS.

#13 Mindy Wahlquist Nominated by: Jessica LaRock

To follow Mindy’s journey please go to: http://www.caringbridge.org/visit/Mindywahlquist

What a wild ride our family has been on for the last month. I am struggling how to even begin telling anyone my story. It all seems like a dream still. I really only remember bits and pieces of the whole ordeal. As you can imagine I was heavily medicated and very confused. Although my husband has told me the story several times I still can’t wrap my head around the timeline of events. I pretty much remember the extreme pain and vomiting. I remember the turbulent plane ride to Mayo clinic and the whole right side of my body going numb thinking it was the end for me. From Friday April 6th to Monday April 16th, I barely remember anything. Once I was at Mayo they stabilized me. Thank God for Mayo. Those brilliant people. They stopped my vomiting right away and took the pain away. I finally slept. I know that my husband found great strength and made the best and quickest decisions he could. He is my hero. He saved my life. I have the best husband in the world. At only 27 years old he pulled it all together. My husband never left my side. He slept on a tiny cot or chair every night holding my hand. I do remember being in Arkansas and seeing the ct scan and telling Chad get me to Mayo. I remember friends coming to be there for Chad. What amazing people we have in our life! I am so in awe of the outpouring of support shown our family. On April 20th, 2012 the pathology was back. My husband, my mother, and myself entered a room to find out what kind of tumor I had. I knew it was bad when my surgeon was emotional. I felt like I went deaf and was floating when he said Glioblastoma multiforme, grade 4 brain cancer.
